Specified Risk Material Management

Lafleche is the only licensed landfill in Ontario approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to receive and dispose of Specified Risk Material (SRM).  As of June 12, 2007 the Province has introduced the Enhanced Animal Feed Ban which bans such tissues as the skull, brain, trigeminal ganglia, eyes, spinal cord, distal ileum, and the dorsal root ganglia of cattle aged 30 months or older, from the human food supply.  The ban was put in place to eliminate the possibility of spread of the Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad-cow disease.  

Lafleche has dedicated equipment and trained personnel who manage the material on a daily basis.
