2 - How do I dispose of refrigeration and air conditioning units which contain Freon (a refrigerant chemical)?
Lafleche is only permitted to accept solid non-hazardous waste therefore Freon must be removed by a licensed coolant specialist prior to disposal. For a fee of $40 + HST, we will arrange for the proper disposal of Freon containing appliances. If Freon has been removed, the unit must have a visible certificate of Freon removal attached to it prior to entering the scale.
Used tires are collected at Moose Creek Tire Recycling; you can contact them at 613-538-4830
4 - Do you offer waste collection services?
Yes, we now offer waste collection services, click here to find out more.
5 - Why do we need landfills?
Waste reduction and recycling diverts large parts of our waste from landfills, but not all. Lafleche disposes of that residual waste in a safe and environmental manner.
6 - What is a BioReactor landfill?
A BioReactor landfill is designed to reintroduce moisture to increase decomposition by enhancing microbial activity. Lafleche uses an anaerobic BioReactor landfill to treat waste. Collected leachate is reintroduced to the waste to maintain favourable moisture levels for microbes.
7 - What is leachate?
Leachate is created when moisture (i.e. rain) picks up contaminants as it travels through the waste mound.
8 - How is leachate collected and treated?
Through the use of an engineered drainage collection system specially designed to collect and capture the leachate for treatment, the leachate is collected in a network of piping underlying the landfill. Collecting and treating leachate enables Lafleche to ensure that groundwater is not negatively impacted. To find out more, click here.
9 - What is Specified Risk Material (SRM)? How does Lafleche dispose of SRM?
Lafleche is permitted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to dispose of SRM in our BioReactor. For more information, click here.
Transporters of SRM must provide a valid copy of their CFIA permit which specifies what approved facilities the material can be brought to. All SRM is received in an enclosed area and unloaded into a disposal tank. The vehicle transporting SRM is rinsed prior to leaving the SRM Receiving Area. Dedicated equipment is used to reload the material and transport it to a pre-dug disposal hole in the landfill (away from the tipping face). Waste is placed over the disposal hole and the disposal location is recorded using our Computer-Aided Earthmoving System which captures and records GPS coordinates.
10 - What is landfill gas?
Landfill gas is produced by the decomposition of waste in the landfill. The gases produced are composed of Methane (40-60%) and Carbon Dioxide.
Lafleche captures the methane gas and transforms the gas into electricity. The electricity feeds into the Hydro grid and is distributed to residents and businesses in our community.

11 - Are hazardous wastes permitted for disposal?
No, hazardous waste materials are not accepted at our site.
12 - Is there any recycling taking place at the landfill?
Lafleche recovers scrap metal, including used white goods (appliances, refrigerators, heaters). The recovered metal is sold to market for reuse.
