The BioReactor landfill has been designed and operated to accelerate the decomposition of waste and increasing the amount of bio-gas generated. In 2011, a landfill gas collection system was installed in the BioReactor to collect the methane gas. The system is designed to capture bio-gas for conversion to heat and energy.

In April 2010, Lafleche was approved by the Ontario Power Authority as part of the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program to produce 4.5 MW of Renewable Energy from the methane gas produced by the BioReactor. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change approved system consists of a series of vertical extraction wells, a fully enclosed flare, and (4) Jenbacher engines for generation of 4.5 MW of Green power to the Ontario grid.

The thermal energy produced by the engines will be utilized to pre-heat the BioReactor leachate prior to treatment, and to provide climate control for future greenhouses where Lafleche will operate an aquaponics project to raise Tilapia fish and grow vegetables in an enriched carbon dioxide atmosphere.
